When we think of home safety we think of things like alarms and security systems. So many things around the home are designed to alert you to a problem using noise, but if you have hearing loss and you are not in the process of wearing hearing aids, what are you supposed to do? If hearing loss means that you miss one smoke detector and the alarm clock goes off, you could be missing crucial appointments from your job, or you could even be missing the fact that there is a fire in your home. The good news here is that there are ways that you can feel safer in your home without needing to use noise.

Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarm systems use bright, blinking lights to indicate the smoke alarm is going off if you don’t have the capacity to hear it. You can buy adapters for your existing smoke alarms which means you don’t have to go through the house and replace all of them. When you pair it with an essential alert system, you can even add a vibrating shaker that you can put under your pillow to alert you to the noise.

Doorbells

When somebody wants to come into your home and see you, they will ring the doorbell. If you can’t hear anything, this may be a little fruitless. A doorbell alert can send a signal to receive the flashes of light instead of ringing. It will increase the volume of the doorbell, or activate a shaker under your pillow or couch cushion – or it can do all three.

Baby Monitors

It’s quite a concern for parents who are bringing a baby into the world when they are dealing with hearing loss, but they won’t be able to hear them. The simplest way that you could be allowed it’s your baby crying through the night, is it a baby monitor that has a vibrating shaker under the pillow. You can also find systems that use multiple monitors or video so that you can just glance at the video monitor that could be lighting up and flashing to tell you that there are some noise levels that have gone above normal.

Alarm Clocks

A simple solution to alarm clocks is to put the alarm on your phone and use the vibrator setting, but you can also buy alarm clock alerts that increase the alarm volume or use a shaker, or even use flashing lights. Some others have outlets where you can plug in any bedside lamp to the alarm clock and it will turn on and off as the lab sounds. This way, you won’t have to worry about missing out on getting up for work.

Landline Phones

You can have a traditional phone in your house even when you are dealing with hearing us. You can get traditional phones tailored to those with hearing loss or purchase accessories to use with the phone you already have. From flashing lights to a louder ring, you can make sure that your phone will alert you when somebody is calling. You can even get a phone that has a system whereby you can text to speak.

Hearing Aid Apps

There are apps that can help you with more safety features than ever before. Some of them allow you to pass smart home features with hearing aids so that you can connect to the Internet using the Internet of things. For example, your home security system can connect you directly with your hearing aids if there has been a fire, a frozen pipe, a water leak or even a break in.

Cloud-based networks compare to Internet connected devices and applications together and see what you need to know through your hearing aids via Bluetooth. Speaking to your audiologist about ensuring that you have hearing aids that are Bluetooth enabled will ensure that you are able to get the help that you need, with the better technology and you feel safer at home.

When it comes down to it, you need to make sure that you have the right support at all times. If you need hearing aids or you are currently dealing with hearing loss, the best thing that you can do is make sure that you book an appointment with a qualified audiologist. You can get the best recommendations for the best hearing aids and smart home systems for your needs. Contact
